All great cities want to grow their economies, steward their environment, improve the health and safety of their citizens and insure that governments and non-profits create sound and equitable policies.
WSU’s Metropolitan Center for Applied Research and Extension (MCARE), puts ‘the people’s university’ to work for Washington’s cities, bringing world class expertise to help inform data driven decisions and implement change that works. Utilizing applied research, MCARE’s work is outcome driven and problem oriented, geared toward developing practical knowledge and place-based solutions to alleviate modern world problems.
Headquartered at WSU North Puget Sound at Everett, and with over 30 years of collective experience working with the complex socio-political landscape of the Puget Sound region, MCARE staff serve as the conduit between metropolitan decision makers and WSU faculty expertise across the state. This project-based and client-centered approach gives MCARE the flexibility to respond quickly to emerging metropolitan needs, and help build capacity to create sustainable solutions for the future.
Learn More about Washington
In this section, you can find data and create a custom map of the member state by either Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) or Rural-Urban Continuum Code (RUCC). Read more about how MSA and RUCC are defined.
To select the region you’re interested in exploring, first choose MSA or RUCC using the toggle. Then, select your area of interest by using the dropdown or clicking on the map. Use the Explore the Data button to learn more about the population of your selected MSA or RUCC. To create your own data-driven map or report with additional data, use the buttons below the table.
In addition to the population data above, we have incorporated access to a Map Room and Reporting tool. The Map Room provides access to over 34,000 layers spanning topics such as demographics, environment, health, economics, and more. The Reporting tool provides 35 indicators related to demographics, belonging, contribution, vitality, thriving, and green infrastructure. Click the buttons below to access the full Map Room and Reporting tool.
